Of all the disappointment of the election results last night (albeit with a few surprise victories for the Democrats) that has been harder to swallow the defeat of the great progressive senator from Wisconsin, Russ Feingold is. Feingold was one of the few representatives who are really for his progressive values and beliefs, no matter how much it seemed.
It was the only U.S. Senator Feingold who voted against the Patriot Act unconstitutional signed in the days following11. September, when he was very unpopular and dangerous to vote against the law. In 90 years he was one of the few senators who are against the leader of his party, Clinton, Clinton with the ideas of market deregulation, a trend that was helped to the recent recession. He stood up to the president has made in its conception of NAFTA, many argue that serious harm to workers on both sides of the border. It 'was the senator who came to the side of Sen. John McCain to goCampaign finance reform (which unfortunately was unconstitutional and undemocratic by the absurd decision of the Supreme Court).
Feingold can be proud, knowing that he was with his principles, even if they are extremely unpopular. Unfortunately, the man who defeated him, Ron Johnson, a millionaire who could somehow unlimited sweep to victory in the madness that was the last election. He chooses to ignore climate change, argues the same economic trickledownwho have done nothing but enrich the rich and the other wounded, and Atlas Shrugged as its leader philosophical book.
The United States needs to senators like Russ Feingold, we lost a great and important progressive voice in the Senate. Was there a few who really makes me reconsider the need for legislative term limits. My hope is that other legislators take up the legacy he left and stand for what is best for the common man, the worker, both immigrants andOppressed. Feingold has left to do a shining example of this.
